Accessories

Einhell CC-BC 2M Rectifier

The attractive price of this universal car battery rectifier is one of the first advantages we can highlight. In fact, such an accessory should be absent from the equipment of any car owner.

The system controlled by a special microprocessor allows a multi-stage charging of car batteries, without affecting their durability. The user is offered the choice of voltages, from 6 to 12 Volts, and the manufacturer specifies that the rectifier has compatibility with batteries between 3 and 60 Ah (minimum and maximum).

It includes protection against dust and water droplets, and its weight is about 300 grams, so it will easily find its place in almost any storage space. For guidance, it can charge a battery from 25% to 100% in about 25-30 hours. It can be connected to both 6 Volt and 12 Volt batteries and is compatible with all battery types (AGM, VRLA, VLA SLA, GEL, WET, ACID PLATA). You can also set it for winter mode if you need a recharge at temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius.

Buying guide

For those without much experience with cars, choosing a car battery, at a good price, can be quite a daunting task. Not only are there many models on the market, but they look like each other at first glance. Therefore, the following section aims to elucidate from the dilemmas of choosing a new car battery:

Compatibility with your car: here, we refer to the size and amperage. In the technical book of the car, you will meet its height, 190 or 175 millimeters (European standards). You can, of course, also orient yourself to the original battery, measuring it or taking it with you to the store.

Voltage: compatibility also holds the voltage, and here we have two values: either 12 Volts or 24. You probably already know that ordinary cars and small minibusses have 12 Volt networks. However, some SUVs or trucks use 24 Volts.

Battery type: It is important to know that, like all batteries, even the best car batteries will become less and less efficient over time. You can opt for two types: those with acid and lead and alkaline.

The first type is the most common in cars nowadays, and they may or may not require periodic maintenance.

Thus, those with liquid electrolytes will need to be filled at such time intervals, while those with gelled electrolyte will not. Obviously, the latter has a longer wear time and unload more difficult, otherwise their presence on the market would not be justified.

Alkaline batteries use zinc and magnesium oxide for the cathode and anode, respectively. They are quite rare but have a longer lifespan. As for disadvantages, they can leak, which could damage the engine area, and their weight is high.

Capacity: this refers to how much energy it can store, whether we are talking about a cheap, good, or expensive, premium car battery. The ability of the alternator of your car has an influence on this parameter, as it will recharge the battery while driving.

The unit of measure for capacity is Ah (amps per hour). A 75Ah battery will last about 7 and a half hours, without being recharged, if the total load it has to generate is 10 Amps.

Therefore, if you do not know the task, it will be difficult to estimate its duration. For guidance, look for values similar to those of the original (or old) battery that was equipped with your car, it is good to look for higher values. In addition, during the ride, the battery is recharged, but it is good to know that frequent stops and starts will require more than constant walking.

Date of manufacture of the battery: There are plenty of opinions about the best car batteries, which say that the most recently manufactured products are preferable. To determine that date, on the label you must search for a code consisting of a letter and a number.

The letter represents the month, A being January, B February and so on, while the figure represents the year – 6 for 2016, 8 for 2018 and so on. Therefore, to give an example, if you see D / 8 then the respective battery was manufactured in April 2018.

Cold starting current: if you are looking for car batteries, at good prices, you must also consider this factor. But here we are not talking about a fixed value, because of the cylinder and the type of engine of your car this parameter.

Diesel engines require a higher starting current, at least 750 Amps, because starting involves the commissioning of special pumps. For gasoline engines, however, we can recommend values from 400 to 580 Amps, depending on the cylinder they have.

To explain and calculate this value, the amperage must be generated for at least 10 seconds, at a temperature of 018 degrees Celsius, at a voltage of over 7.5 Volts between the battery terminals. Thus, enough power will be guaranteed to start the car even in heavy winters.

The guarantee offered: here, considering that you could look for car batteries, at a good price, for the desire to save money, you could fall into the trap of believing that a longer warranty is preferable. In other words, a long warranty means that the battery can be replaced for a long time, right?

Well, yes, but it is advisable to always prioritize the rest of the battery performance and specifications, in other words, the above factors. If a product meets the needs of your car well, then it may not be necessary to replace it.

The warranty may appear in the form of code such as “24/84” meaning it will be exchanged for free in 24 months, and 84 months is the additional guarantee, which is partially paid.

Polarity: here, we refer to the position of the terminals: positive-right, or positive-left. The standard, which is the most common, is positive-right, predominant in Europe and Romania (PLUS terminal is on this side). On the left, you will meet at Japanese cars, usually. It is important to know that for nothing you will buy a quality car battery if you cannot mount it because of polarity.

Production company: as with car tires, there are also a number of brand names, which are synonymous with quality. The choice according to this factor is especially recommended for beginners, especially if we take into account the fact that their products are accompanied by the certifications for the European norms and for the Romanian Auto Registry.

To offer a small list of well-known companies in the field, we can mention Varta, Bosch, Fulmen, Moll, and Macht.

Okay, these are the criteria of choice for car batteries. It is not as difficult as it seems, and in many cases, you can go to the special shops. You may still have questions, though, and for that, we are pointing you to the section below:

What do I do when I have a fully discharged car battery?

You have several options: if you have cables with which you can connect the battery to another car (jumpers), then you can charge your battery. All you need is another vehicle, which, after connecting the terminals of the two batteries, will run the engine in relays for about 10 minutes.

On some older cars, another option was to push the car, speed-geared, to start its engine, after which the alternator will load it. Remember, if the battery is broken and there are leaks, then you will have to remove it and replace it, not try any of the above maneuvers!

How do I charge a car battery?

If the question is above, you have the option to charge a battery with the help of another vehicle, using jumper cables. If you do not have this, you can still charge the battery with a car battery rectifier, which is a device that will get you out of this kind of a mess.

It does not cost much (under 200 RON, most models) and you can quickly learn how to use it, by reading the simple instructions in the manual (connect the terminals, select the amperage and voltage and start the rectifier).

Do I need a car battery tester or do I work?

It never hurts to use a battery tester, but these devices can cost a few hundred lei. If you are looking for the best car battery, it is always a recommended idea to test it at the service, where you certainly have testers.

When is a car battery amperage measurement required?

This procedure is required when a battery does not successfully cope with the car. If you suspect that you need a larger capacity product, you can measure its current by connecting an ammeter set to 10A, in series with the battery, during which you turn on the central locking or other electrical elements of the car.

Also, the measurement of the amperage would be good to be done at the periodic technical inspections, within a service.

What does a battery check with the multimeter mean?

First, you must measure the voltage without any consumer switched on (headlights, engine, breakdowns, and so on). Connect the battery multimeter and in the case of cars, it should show 12.5 Volts, in any case, should not be below 12 Volts. This measurement should be done about two hours after the engine has stopped!

After that, measure the voltage by turning on the headlights or the radio, in which case the voltage should not go down too much. When starting the engine, make another measurement, and at this point, the voltage should be above 10 Volts, if outside are more than 20 degrees Celsius. After that, while the engine is running and the battery is charging, the displayed value should be over 13.8 Volts, if not, it means that the alternator is defective.

In the end, measure the consumption with the ammeter, set to 10A, connected in series with the battery, with the engine stopped. Turn on a consumer such as central locking, and the displayed value should not drop much if the battery is good.

How many volts should a new car battery have?

A value of about 12.5 Volts indicates a good battery when you buy it. During operation, the optimum value should be between 13.7 and 14.7 Volts. In the case of batteries for larger vehicles, double the sizes, approximately: thus, when not in use, they should have 25 Volts, and during recharging, about 27.4 to 27.8 Volts!

Instructions for installing the car battery

We include, in the following paragraphs, some indications regarding the change of the battery in a car. First of all, we mention that it is always good for this process to be performed at a service, by the mechanics, especially if you are a beginner who is not very good at cars!

1. Remove the old battery

The engine must be stopped at all times during the process of removing and installing the car batteries. Obviously, the handbrake should also be pulled. Some carpets and possibly protective gloves will be needed in case of acid leaks under the hood.

Disconnect the cables from the battery terminals, first the one with the earthing (it could be either the PLUS or the MINUS, depending on the car – look at the technical book to find out).

You will need a patent to disconnect the cables. After you have released the battery from the clamping systems (these may vary, depending on the car model), be prepared to lift it, but keep in mind that it is quite heavy, so be careful not to hurt your back!

2. Clean the location of the battery

Equip with gloves, cloth, and detergent, wash the platform that holds the battery of any impurities, be it rust, dust, or acid leaks. Before installing the new battery, allow the platform to dry thoroughly! Note: for cleaning, you can find special solutions for engines, in trade, which eliminates dirt while protecting the metal and plastic elements.

3. Install a new battery

After everything has dried, place the new battery, fixing it with all the connection methods present. In fact, in general, you will have to take the same steps you did when you removed the old battery, in the opposite direction.

Also, after fixing it in place, connect the terminals, then the grounded terminal (either the PLUS or the MINUS, as in the case of your car) is connected. You can now test the car by starting it.

Remember that batteries of all types contain acids and other substances that are extremely harmful to the environment, but also to human health! That is why we advise you to always wear gloves, possibly even goggles when handling car batteries!

In addition, after you have removed the old battery, give it to a specialized recycling center and do not simply throw it away. Thus, it will be managed in a way that does not endanger the natural environment, in any form.

If you choose to go to a service, to change a professional battery, we can give you a tip: it is advisable to take this step by using the mechanics of the representative who sold your car.

They have enough experience with all the systems of your car, so they will do the job much better than anyone, and if any problem arises, they will know how to solve it quickly and efficiently.
